Looking in the mirror each day and seeing yourself age isn’t easy.  We’ve all seen cosmetic surgery that has gone bad and I personally am not going to take that chance!   Now, if I can make them disappear a bit, why the heck not?

I tried a lot of primers on the market and some didn’t work at all and some did a little. Some are thicker than others and I don’t like a thick feeling primer. How to Apply Primer

Cleanse your skin and pat dry. Use your normal moisturizer and eye cream and allow it to be absorbed.

Decide which area you want to apply the primer to first. Use small amounts to minimize lines and wrinkles.

You could start around the eyes by blending and gently patting the eyes. Make sure you leave an even surface (no rubbing) when applying the primer that way you don’t have an uneven surface.

If you have large pores around your nose they can be easily camouflaged by gently blending and patting.

You can apply primer to your entire face to enhance complexion color, cover age spots, freshen pale looking skin or just to your problem areas of wrinkles.

A Few Tips To Planting Your First Organic Vegetable Garden

If you are planting a big garden or a small garden organic gardening is not as difficult as you might think it is. In anything, if you know what you are doing, it is a very exciting experience.

Deciding What to Grow

When thinking about where you would like to put your garden, it is important to know how much sun it will receive and need daily. All growing plants depend on light. Sunlight is a critical component of the photosynthesis of the plant structure.Spinach-Iron

Choosing a spot to plant

Choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours per day. The closer your garden is to a source of water, the better it will be. Make sure you purchase some organic soil at your local gardening center or if you have your own, that is great.

Planting seeds or plants

Read seed packages to determine how far in advance the seeds need to be planted to time them for moving outdoors after the last frost date.

Always plant more than you anticipate on eating. With weather and pests, you can lose a garden very quickly. Don’t overdo it of course, but just some extras, just in case.

Determine when to plant seeds according to what growing zone you live in.  You will also need to know the chemical symbols for Nitrogen (N) potassium (K) and phosphorus (P). These are the three important macronutrients plants need. You will see the N-P-K ratio listed on fertilizer packages. You will first start by filling a tray with soil. Then use your hand to level the soil. Then you need to compact the soil by pressing on it or using a flat board. Moisten the soil, sow the seeds, cover the seeds with soil and then compact the soil.

You may want to cover the seeds with plastic wrap to keep them warm depending on the temperature you are keeping them at. Plastic wrap keeps the humidity in and keeps the seeds warm so make sure you watch them closely so they don’t get overheated.Once you plant the seeds they will eventually sprout and once they do, there is no more need for keeping the seeds warm with a plastic wrap.

If you are planting an already grown plant, make sure you dig the hole big enough (but not too big) for your plant. Make sure you space them accordingly to how big they become.Plant in sunlight. Remember plants need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.

It is important to revitalize your soil depending on your planting season. Plants need the proper nutrients to grow abundantly. Plants lose nutrients in the soil after a period of time, so make sure you are keeping up on the nourishment they need. Make sure you know at what time frame they need the most nourishment.

You will also need to have mulch. Mulch helps the moisture stay in the soil and protecting it from the sun and drying up your soil.

Pests

It is important to know that when you grow a garden it is important to not just grow the vegetables but to have flowers and herbs next to them as well so that pests don’t zero in on just your garden.

There are also many ways to make your own organic pesticide. One that I use is mixing organic castile soap and water and spraying the plants with them every other day and that works well for where I live. You could also try hot pepper sprays or horticultural oil.

Other things to plant behind garden

If you are looking to plant vines for height in the background of a flower garden, for example, plant them next to a fence so that they can grow upward and create some shade for the foods you planted if needed.

It is also important to know that you should move your plants to different spots every year. This prevents disease from spreading because your soil didn’t have enough time to build up harmful organisms. Planting in the same spot year after year is what causes this.

Plants are often watered too much and when this happens the nutrients from the soil cannot be absorbed through the root.

This does take time and patience, but I guarantee that the rewards are even better.

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) also known as Tulsi is an aromatic herb in the mint (Lamiaceae) family. Holy Basil has believed to be indigenous to the Indian continent over 5,000 years ago and now is cultivated all over the world.

This is such an amazing herb and there are more than 60 varieties of this pungent plant, each with its own characteristic color and aroma. Depending on the type, basil can be green, white or purple with a scent reminiscent of lemon, camphor, cloves, cinnamon, anise, and thyme. Scientific research is now confirming the beneficial effects of Holy Basil. Iron Deficiency and Your Health

We’ve all heard that if you don’t have enough iron in your body, you can get anemia. You can get anemia when your red blood cells decrease from lack of iron. Iron is an essential mineral your body needs. Your body needs it to carry oxygen throughout your body. Did you know that iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder in the world? Without sufficient iron, your body cannot produce enough hemoglobin, a substance in your red blood cells that allow your body to carry oxygen to your body’s tissues. When eating iron it is absorbed through the upper part of the small intestine.

  1. Anemia if mild, usually doesn’t cause complications. However, if you leave it untreated, anemia caused by iron deficiency can cause some severe health problems.
  2. A study showed that iron has relevant biological functions, for example, the formation of haemoglobin, myoglobin and numerous enzymatic groups. And without it, iron deficiency increases with the severity of heart failure.

Iron deficiency symptoms:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Inflammation or soreness of your tongue
  • Brittle nails
  • Weakness
  • Pale skin
  • Chest pain, fast heartbeat or shortness of breath
  • A headache, dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or starch
  • Poor appetite, especially in infants and children with iron deficiency anemia

 

Who’s at risk?

Frequent blood donors – Giving blood lowers the iron in your body. The Red Cross now recommends that frequent blood donors should take a multivitamin containing iron or an iron-only supplement to replace the iron lost with each donation.

Vegetarians – Micronutrients of special concern for the vegan include vitamins B-12 and D, calcium, and long-chain n–3 (omega-3) fatty acids. Unless vegans regularly consume foods that are fortified with these nutrients, appropriate supplements should be consumed in order to get the nutrients needed.  In some cases, iron and zinc status of vegans may also be of concern because of the limited bioavailability of these minerals.

Woman – Woman who are pregnant showed higher levels of iron deficiency than those who weren’t because their bodies are producing more blood to provide nutrients for the baby.

Infants and children – Mothers who are iron deficient transfer the iron deficiency to their children before they are born.  A study showing insufficient intake of iron in children is pretty common because of low iron intake, especially in older children.

There are 2 types of iron, heme and nonheme iron. Our bodies are less efficient at absorbing nonheme iron. Plants and iron-fortified foods contain nonheme iron only, whereas meat, seafood, and poultry contain both heme and nonheme iron.

The Amazing Benefits of Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Baking soda is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3. It is a salt composed of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions. Sodium bicarbonate is a white solid that is crystalline but often appears as a fine powder.

Baking soda has been used for many years in cooking and cleaning. However, it has health benefits as well. Be careful though when you take baking soda because it is high in sodium. Always check with your doctor on what amounts to take. Excess sodium causes things like high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney problems.

Health Benefits of Baking Soda:

  • Neutralizes acid –  The alkaline properties in baking soda enable relief of acid indigestion, severe acidity, and heartburn.
  • Hyperkalemia – Is caused by high levels of potassium and in a study baking soda lowers the acidity in the body.
  • Promotes kidney health – Sodium bicarbonate helps in decreasing stone formation and removing of material that causes the kidney stones.
  • Treats bladder infections – The alkaline compound in baking soda decreases the acidity in the urine which is what causes the pain while urinating.
  • Reduces muscle pain and fatigue – Researchers suggest that baking soda is great for those who have prolonged and intermittent exercise.
  • Pesticide Poisoning – Research in animals has suggested that use of sodium bicarbonate or similar chemicals which make the blood alkaline might save people poisoned by OPs.
  • Reduces the duration of cold and flu – By mixing lukewarm water, salt and baking soda aids in helping to clean the mucus from the nose if done a few times a day.

Skin:

  1. Exfoliates the Skin – use on your hands or face by combining one teaspoon of baking soda with a half cup water and rub into hands or face (circular motions), then rinse.
  2. Relieves Skin Irritation – Baking soda is wonderful for reducing discomfort from sunburn, poison oak or poison ivy and great for allergic reactions.
  3. Relieves Insect Bites – By rubbing baking soda on a bee sting by combining 1 teaspoon and a half cup water to make a paste it will reduce the swelling and for bug bites, it will relieve the itching by just putting it straight on the bitten area.
  4. Relieves Diaper Rash – Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to a bath and soak for 10 minutes will help relief diaper rash.
  5. Soak Your Feet – Put 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda in water and soak for 20 minutes. You can also add some essential oil. Baking soda has antimicrobial properties which may protect body and feet from infection.
  6. Hand Exfoliator – by just simply placing a teaspoon of baking soda in your hand after washing them, will get rid of those dry skin cells and leave your hands really smooth.
  7. Sun Burn Relief – Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda and water in a bowl. Make a light paste and gently put over the sunburned area, let sit on skin for 15 minutes and then rinse with cool water. You can use it as a soak in a bath for sunburn relief as well.
  8. Homemade Toothpaste – By combining 2/3 cup baking soda or more depending on how much you’d like to make and then add water and mix together, you have a very basic toothpaste. If you’d like to add peppermint oil to it, just add a drop or two.
  9. Teeth Whitener – Use a teaspoon of baking soda and add some water to make a paste. Rub it on your teeth and let sit for 5 minutes. You can do this once a week to keep your teeth whiter.

Cleaning:

  1. Air Freshener – If you use a ½ a cup of baking soda in a jar with 15 to 20 drops of essential oil and place a lid with holes in it, it will absorb the nasty odors and emit a light smell of the essential oil you added.
  2. Cleans Your Microwave – By adding 3 tablespoons of baking soda in a microwave safe container and then turn on the microwave for approx. 2 to 3 minutes and then let stand for 5. Your microwave will come out clean and get rid of the grime.
  3. Boosts Laundry Detergent – You can add ½ a cup of baking soda to your regular laundry detergent and it will boost and make whites brighter and soften the water.
  4. Deodorize The Refrigerator – By just opening a box of baking soda and letting it sit in your refrigerator is a great way to calm odors. Do this at least every 3 months or sooner if it has absorbed most of the baking soda.
  5. Removes Oil and Grease – Mixing 3 to 4 tablespoons of baking soda with ¼ a cup of water and then mix and rub on clothes will get rid of the stain.
  6. Deodorize Garbage Can – by mixing a ½ cup of baking soda and 2 cups of water and then pouring it into a garbage can, then scrub with a wire brush, let stand for 15 minutes and then rinse. Double the measurements for a 50-gallon trash can.
  7. Cat Litter Boxes – After you clean your cats’ litter box, pour a light layer of baking soda at the bottom of the litter box and then add your litter on top of that.
  8. Vegetable Wash – Adding a few tablespoons of baking soda to water and then put in a spray bottle and spray your vegetables and scrub lightly will get the dirt off your fresh vegetables. Then rinse very well with just water.
  9. Keeps Ants Out – This is a pet-friendly mixture. Mix 5 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 5 tablespoons of baking soda and put in a cup. Place the cup where the ants are and they will be attracted to the sugar and will accidentally eat the baking soda which will kill them. Remember it needs to be powdered sugar. The reason is that ants are smart and if you use regular sugar they can separate the regular sugar from the baking soda.
  10. Keeps Flowers Fresher Longer – by adding a ½ a teaspoon of baking soda to your vase, flowers will last longer.
  11. Pot and Pan Cleaner – Using 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water and rub on the pan where you want to get off the grime or stuck on foods. Let sit for 10 minutes. You should be able to scrub with a non-abrasive sponge, but sometimes some elbow grease is needed.
  12. Silverware Cleaner –Bring 1 liter of water, I piece of aluminum foil and 1 tablespoon of baking soda to a boil. Then place the silver you want to clean in the pot for approx. 15 seconds and longer if more tarnished. Then take some tongs and take out what is cleaned.
  13. Coffee and Teapot Cleaner – Mix a ¼ cup of baking soda with a pot full of water and pour into the area where you pour water and brew like you would coffee. As a teapot cleaner, combine 2 tablespoons baking soda with 4 cups of hot water. Let it sit for an hour and then scrub.
  14. Floor Cleaner – By adding a ½ a cup of baking soda to a bucket of water you can clean your floors without scratching them. If you want to use on carpet, just sprinkle and wait about 20 minutes and then vacuum.

Milk

The reason we drink milk is either to get the health benefits it or maybe you just like it in your coffee, cereal or other things. If you are lactose intolerant, vegan and/or have a milk allergy, most likely you are using a milk alternative. Either way, many people have or are switching to milk alternatives.

If you walk into a store it is likely you’ll see many milk alternatives. There is soy milk, lactose-free, nut-based products (almond, cashew, coconut, hazelnut and macadamia milk), goats, rice, hemp and others.

Goats milk, like cow’s milk, it is derived from mammals. It has smaller fat molecules than milk, high in fatty acids, rich in calcium, contains selenium, an essential trace mineral that supports the immune system. Cow’s milk is a good source of protein but may be high in saturated fats. For some, it could be an allergy issue and for others, it could be a digestive issue to drive you away from cow’s milk.

Milk Alternatives

  1. Hemp milk – has very little protein, but is rich in certain essential fatty acids.
  2. Soy milk – Soy milk contains no cholesterol and negligible amounts of saturated fat. A glass of soy milk provides the same levels of key nutrients present in cow milk,  including calcium, protein, vitamin A, vitamin D and potassium. Soy milk does have calcium, protein, and potassium. But soy milk is also fortified to be nutritionally comparable to cow’s milk.
  3. Nut milk – This kind of milk is based on a mixture of water and the particular nut (almond, hazel, etc.). Theses milks are lactose, soy, and gluten free. They have unsaturated fats in them (good fat), low in fat and calories. Nut milks have a thickening agent in them, approved by the FDA and is called carrageenan, which is a seaweed extract.   4. Rice milk – This milk tends to be higher in carbohydrates than any other plant based milk. This milk is a good choice for those who have allergies to soy or nuts, or people with food chemical intolerances doing elimination diets.
  5. Oat milk – Contains soluble fiber beta-glucan, which has been clinically proven to reduce the bad cholesterol LDL.  Oat milk has more protein than almond and less carbohydrates than rice milk.
  6. Flax milk – Has Omega 3’s (good fats), lignans and high in fiber.
  7. When looking for any of the above milks, my suggestion would be “whole”, “organic” or “non-GMO.”  Depending on the milk, how much of that particular ingredient (nut, soy, rice, etc.) is in them.  Several Brands that are NON-GMO include: Almond Breeze, Silk, Blue Diamond, Eden Soy and more.
